Hello.
First of all, I'm a complete newbie to the world of Dreambox.
I got my 500S a couple days ago (NOT a clone) and played around with it a bit and successfully flashed the latest Gemini image by ftping to /tmp, placing the image there and renaming it to root.cramfs.
I was trying to access the blue panel but nothing was happening when I learned about the PLi image and decided to give that a try.
So I downloaded the latest one and followed the same procedure but after the flash was complete, I got the Enigma boot logo and my Dreambox just stayed there until it shut off completely (not standby). I still waited for a while but nothing happened. The remote control was not responding either.
So I unplugged the power cable and plugged it in again, the green light came on but nothing on the screen and again no response from the remote control. After leaving it for a while, it again shut off.
I tried to ftp to it again after turning it on but unsuccessfully.
So my guess is that it's pretty dead! I'm hoping that I'll be able to use a serial cable and revive it somehow (although again, I'm a complete newb but I think I'll figure it out) but are there any other thoughts on this...?

Serial cable and try dream-up.
Be shure you got the right image.
There are image for the 500 and the 500 PLUS.
If it's a genuine 500, only a 500 image will work.

And make sure you use a null mode (reversal) cable.
And a proper serial (COM) port - a usb-to-serial adapter probably won't work.

Sorry I do have to disagree here 100%.
While there are many makes and models of usb->serial adapters on the market, the 'ATEN' series is bombproof and we use them here for all types of set top boxes, DM included as well as other serial devices.
Google is your friend.

Another problem many people have w/ usb2serial adapters is that they just plug them in and wonder why they don't work, they never bother to install the drivers for the adapter. It's amazing what the correct drivers can do...

i have the same problem.
i had gemini 4.20 installed on the dm500, and i used Flashwizard 6.3 to flash PLI jade.
the installation stopped at the 'writing and verifiying cramps memory partition' - stucked at 84% and after a few mins i had to disconnect the power of the box to reset it.
after reading a lot in all the forums here i got a Null Modem cable and tried to connect the box - but without luck.
in case anyone wondered, I disconnected all cables , connected the Null modem cable alone started DreamUp 1.3.3.2 and pressed the connect (without network option). then i switched on the dreambox and NOTHING HAPPENS.
Right now my dm500 doesn't work because of that PLI jade and i've no idea what to do !
(can't telnet it, can't ftp it, can't ping it,and doesn't show anything on TV)
i need a little help from the experts....
if anyone else had that problem.... plz help.

Oh wow! Now that got me REALLY worried!! I just got my serial cable today from ebay and will try it as soon as I get home. No idea what's gonna happen so I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet but I hope it all goes well...
What I am pretty certain of is that my box is not a clone!
Will post later with results.

The null modem cable helped me out several times with exactly the same issue. I don't know why it doesn't work for you Comodor. Maybe the version of dreamup you use doesn't work correctly. When I'm home, I'll look into the version of my dreamup. I assume you tried dreamup several times?

Quick question - should I do a flash erase from Dreamup or try the erase.img first (if I can find it)? Or should I just flash the PLi image right from the start?

A flash erase never hurts.
Remnants of a previous image could seriously interfere with a new image.

Phew... that went very well!
So, I connected the serial cable, did a flash erase, unplugged everything for a while, then connected everything back on and flashed the PLi image. When it asked me if I wanted to do a flash erase I answered yes, took a few moments and everything was completed.
I unplugged everything again for a while and then back on and... voila! SO smooth...

Dear Friend
If your dreambox is running GP image after program to PLi your unit 100% die, Please follow the below setup.
Download PLi image, use dreamUP with com port erase the Flash and write in the Pli image.After this programming then your dreambox can use FlashWizard software , if not the unit will die due to the file system is diffrence.
