This setup combines the initial install and updates for both the USB GPS drivers and the USB Data Card Programmer drivers. Garmin GPS USB Drivers support Windows XP 64-bit, Vista 64-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit. Garmin USB Data Card Programmer drivers do not support 64-bit operating systems at this time. Zūmo firmware revisions & downloadsThe Zūmo's firmware is the internal operating software your unit is running on.
To update your unit Software use the Webupdater to automatically keep your operating software current. Up to version 3.50 you can download one of the EXE files listed here and run that.
By using the Webupdater you can get additional download options like Bluetooth & other software revisionsNote that WebUpdater will fail with an obscure message if Internet Explorer is set to 'Work Offline'. If you have a problem, check in IE's File menu that there is no check mark next to 'Work Offline'. (If you change this IE setting you must re-start WebUpdater.)
After version 3.50 Garmin wants us to use WebUpdater so badly, they have hidden the other option. WebUpdater requires a reliable and fast internet connection, as well as a Windows PC running XP or later. If you can't or don't want to use it, there is an alternative method:
Open the software update page. View the 'page source', i.e. the raw html code. In Firefox press Ctrl-U, in IE 6 click View > Source.
Right at the top of the source page Garmin have put the link to the current version of the firmware update file and some instructions on how to use this. Download this file or, if you want to downgrade, try changing the file name to the version you want before downloading it.
You can now either follow the instructions, which still involve WebUpdater, or:
- Connect your Zumo to a computer.
- Check that you have a backup of your Zumo, especially all tracks, waypoints and routes you want to keep.
- Copy the file you have downloaded into the Garmin folder on the Zumo.
- Rename the file to GUPDATE.GCD
- Disconnect the Zumo and let it restart completely. On the startup screen it should show that it is updating software.
- Perform a reset.
- Re-configure anything that has been reset, like data fields, routing preferences, ..
- Re-load your waypoints and routes.
After installing the current latest NT maps (Europe & USA 2008 versions) the latest firmware is automatically installed as well. Unfortunately, so are some bugs related to these firmware versions. On this page you can find older versions to roll back if needed.
Garmin Zumo 660 Drivers Windows 7
You are advised to have a look at the BUGS & issues list first before up- or downgrading your firmwareIf you want to go back to an older firmware version, download and install it from this list. It is advised to back up any routes / waypoints / tracks you have in the Zūmo before changing your firmware.
Generally speaking it is best to have the latest firmware installed on your unit, since new functions are added and old bugs are repaired.
Be aware that buying a new Zūmo does not guarantee you to have the latest firmware version!
If you have installed a higher version, all the updates in lower numbered versions are installed as well, so you only need to run the highest version you want.
You can check your current version with tapping the following sequence: wrench / system / about
Warning: Do not load firmware 3.90 or lower on zumo660 models which have firmware 4.00 preloaded by Garmin from factory. Because of the new TFT screens this could lead to a broken zumo 660.

Can anyone suggest the best way to plan a detailed route on my laptop and download to my Garmin? I expected my Zumo 660LM would come with route planning software similar to Google maps. Don't see anything obvious. Garmin Express seems to just be a map & firmware updater. I tried to import a Google KLM file (after converting to GPX) but that does not work well because it imports to the Garmin as separate 'favorites' which I then have to assemble all the points into a custom route (pia) and then Garmin still recalcs the route away from the twisty motorcycle roads I have chosen in Google Maps. Thanks!

- edited April 2015Basecamp is Garmins trip planning software http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/basecamp although there are issues with certain zumo models so for those the older Mapsource is recommended.
Your model is one where Mapsource is recommended
http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={f2cf7300-77af-11e2-65d0-000000000000}&kbName=garmin
To install Mapsource first install Basecamp then Mapsource from here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 - edited April 2015If just want to use Mapsource and you install City Navigator to your computer first, I don't think you would need Basecamp at all, would you? The problew was installing Mapsource on a computer that didn't have any Garmin maps on it. That would cause the installer to abort with an error about 'no previous mapsource' or something similar.
And of course, you must install the City Navigator map on your computer to do any route planning. But if you use Basecamp instead, then you don't need to install a map on the computer (unless you want to). You can just connect your Zumo and Basecamp will read the map off it. But the Zumo would always need to be connected for this to work. You can, however, copy the contents of the Zumo to a flash drive and Basecamp will read the map from it instead. - Thanks so much for the quick responses! I downloaded Base Camp and mapsource. Base Camp displays the maps from my plugged in Zumo whereas Mapsource does not so I'm going with that.
- edited April 2015That may not be your best choice, this from the FAQ I pointed you at:
The following devices are NOT compatible with routing in BaseCamp:
•zumo 400 series
•zumo 500 and 550
•zumo 660 and 665
These devices may appear to take a route without issue; however, when navigating the route, an error message may appear. An alternate program to use is MapSource.
Since you have a Zumo with lifetime mapsyou can use Express to download the map to your PC for Mapsource to use. - I love it… Garmin is telling owners of current model Zumos to use software they stopped supporting four years ago. The Zumo 665 lists for $700, Zumo 660 is $600. And they cannot support it with their current software? Wow.
- Yes, seems to be the way the Zumos work .. clearly whoever designed them didn't consider compatibility with Basecamp! Why it happens I have no idea, and some users of these models have reported success using Basecamp so it may just be the odd route that fails.
- Wow that is aggravating. I think I'll call them today. I guess I will also make a second route via MapSource for each route I just created.
- edited April 2015I wonder what would happen if you created a route in BaseCamp, imported it into MapSource, then transferred it to the zumo. I agree with Boyd. Garmin should do what it takes to fix this problem on an expensive device like the zumo. It shouldn't matter whether it is a firmware problem or a Basecamp problem . Garmin should support their customers. This looks like another case where Garmin engineers operate in silos. I wonder if the software guys and hardware guys ever talk to each other.
- Alan, I had the same thought .. problem is to validate it we need someone with the necessary Zumo who has a problem with a Basecamp route who can then try it and see what happens ..
- edited April 2015Here is a quote I got from a member at gpspassion when I asked him if he had successfully created routes in Basecamp and transferred them to his Zumo 660LM:
'Yes indeed. I have read on Garmin's forum that there are problems between BC and the zumo 660, but with some exceptions I have had good luck planning very long and complex rides, such as last year's 3700-mile trip through CT, NJ, PA, WV, VA, NC and TN.' - interesting. As a test I am thinking of just duplicating the routes I've already entered with BC using Mapsource. That way if I encounter an error on the road I can switch over to the MapSource routes.
- edited April 2015@JackFirpley .. If you do that it would be interesting to do a line-by-line comparison of the GPX files from each progarm to see what is different. However, from t923347's post, it appears not all BaseCamp routes fail, so for your route, maybe there will not be any difference.
One would have to think (or at least hope) that the Basecamp programmers have already done this exercise. - Like most programmers it's probably on their mile-long list of bugs.
- I think the issue is with the Zumo team rather than Basecamp.
- That could be sussamb, but apparently BaseCamp and Mapsource generate something different in the GPX file that gets transferred to the zumo. Otherwise how could the zumo react differently to a Basecamp route than it does to the same Mapsource route?
- edited April 2015Yes, that must happen I guess but it seems it's only those specific zumos that have issues. BaseCamp works with every other Garmin device. I've been looking at the Zumo forum and this seems a non issue there, many seem to use BaseCamp without a problem.
- edited April 2015If I were Garmin, I would treat anyone who bought a $700 dedicated GPS really nice, because if they lose them, they probably won't come back. ;)
- Well shucks I downloaded a map from gpsfiledepot and ran the installer but cannot get MapSource to recognize it.No maps showing in MapSource just my routes that came infrom my Zumo.
- Some older GPSFileDepot maps have a bug that prevents them from showing in Mapsource if you are using 64 bit Windows 7 or 8. The installer that was used for these maps did not create one of the registry keys that is necessary for the maps to appear.
Try running the free GMTK program, it can diagnose and fix problems like this:
http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html
If the map still does not show, then install this map. It is known to create the correct registry keys for Mapsource. Once the keys are created, all maps should then show.
http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53/
Also note that if you installed a map while Mapsource was running, then it will not show until you close Mapsource and open it again. - Another reason to stick with Mapsource..I detest BC
